ChatGPT SEO: How to Get Your Brand Named and Cited
There is no ranking to climb in ChatGPT. Here is how it chooses which brands to name and which pages to cite, and an eight-step playbook to get into both.
ChatGPT SEO is the work of getting your brand named and cited in ChatGPT’s answers. There is no ranking to climb. ChatGPT names brands it knows from its training data and from the pages it retrieves when it searches the web. So the work is to be present, and clearly described, in the sources it retrieves, and to make your own pages easy to quote.
This post covers the two answer modes, an eight-step playbook, what does not work, and what a tool can and cannot do.
ChatGPT answers in two modes
Every ChatGPT answer about your category comes from one of two places. Most of the confusion about ChatGPT SEO comes from treating them as one.
| Answers from memory | Answers with web search | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the brands come from | What the model learned in training | Pages it retrieves for this question, plus what it learned |
| Sources shown | None | Yes, as links and a source list |
| How fast your work shows | Slowly: it waits for a future model | Weeks: it waits for indexing and retrieval |
| What you can see | Only the answer text | The answer and the cited pages |
Answers from memory. When ChatGPT answers without searching, it relies on what the model absorbed in training. If the web described your category without you in it when the training data was gathered, the model does not know you well, and no change to your site this week can fix that. What helps is the slow work: a wider web that describes you consistently, so the next model learns the right picture.
Answers with web search. When ChatGPT searches, it rewrites the question into one or more searches, reads the results, and writes an answer with visible sources. This mode is where ChatGPT SEO pays off fastest. A page that gets retrieved and quoted can change the answer within weeks. It also shows its work: the cited pages tell you exactly what ChatGPT trusted for that question.
Buying questions (“best X for Y”, “alternatives to Z”, “X pricing”) often trigger a search, but not every time. You do not control which mode a buyer gets, so you work on both.
How ChatGPT finds pages when it searches
OpenAI does not publish a full list of its search sources. At its launch, OpenAI said ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers alongside content from partners (October 2024). Microsoft Bing has been reported as one of those providers. That is one reason Bing matters more for ChatGPT than it does for classic SEO.
OpenAI also runs its own crawlers. At the time of writing, its crawler documentation separates OAI-SearchBot, which finds pages for ChatGPT search, from GPTBot, which gathers training data. You can allow one and block the other. If you block OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, the documentation says your pages may not appear in ChatGPT search answers.
The ChatGPT SEO playbook
This is the manual method. It costs an afternoon to set up and an hour a week to keep going.
1. Find the questions buyers ask
Write 15 to 25 questions in the words a buyer uses: “best [category] for [audience]”, “alternatives to [market leader]”, “[rival] vs [rival]”, “how do I [solve the problem you solve]”. Leave your brand name out of most of them, because a question with your name in it measures recognition, not recommendation. Sales calls and support tickets are good sources of real wording. Our guide to checking whether ChatGPT recommends your brand covers prompt design in more depth.
2. Sample them, more than once
Ask each question several times in fresh chats with memory and custom instructions off. ChatGPT gives a different answer each time, so one ask tells you very little. This is prompt sampling. Ten answers per question is a reasonable floor before you trust a percentage. Log each answer: were you named, in what position, which rivals were named, and which pages were cited.
3. Read which sources are cited
Sort every cited page into a group: comparison and “best of” articles, review sites, communities and forums, directories, competitor pages, and your own site. Count how often each domain appears. This list is your to-do list. It tells you where ChatGPT looks when it answers your buyers’ questions. AI citation tracking is this step done for every sampled answer.
4. Get into those sources
Work down the list from the most cited domain:
- Comparison articles. Find the authors of the “best X” posts ChatGPT cites. Send them something useful: a correction, a feature they missed, a free account to test. Do not pay for placement.
- Review sites. If a review site is cited and your listing is thin, complete it. Ask real customers for reviews. Keep screenshots and pricing current.
- Communities. Answer questions where buyers ask them. State your affiliation every time. Correct old threads that describe a product you no longer sell.
- Directories. Claim and complete your listing in the directories that appear in the citations. Ignore the ones that do not.

5. Make your own pages answer-first and quotable
When ChatGPT does cite your site, it quotes the page that answers the question most directly. Give it that page:
- Put a complete answer in the first paragraph. Write it so a reader can quote it alone.
- Answer one question per page, and use the buyer’s words in the title and headings.
- Put facts in text, not in images: prices, plans, limits, integrations, who the product is for.
- Publish an honest comparison page for each rival buyers ask about. Say where the rival is better.
- Add a FAQ with the real questions, each answered in one paragraph.
6. Keep facts about your brand consistent everywhere
ChatGPT blends many sources into one description. If your homepage says “for agencies”, your review listing says “for enterprises” and an old directory entry lists a price you dropped last year, the answer blends all three. Write one sentence that says what you are and who it is for. Use it on your site, your social profiles, your review listings and your directory entries. Update old prices and plan names wherever they appear.
7. Make sure the site is crawlable and indexed in Bing as well as Google
Check robots.txt. Allow OAI-SearchBot if you want to appear in ChatGPT search. Make sure your important pages render their main text in HTML, not only after scripts run. Then check indexing in two places: Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Submit your sitemap to both and fix what they report. Because Bing is reported to be one of ChatGPT’s search sources, a page Bing has not indexed starts at a disadvantage.
8. Measure again
Run the same questions, the same way, on a schedule. Keep the question set fixed while you work so the before and after compare fairly. Write down the date of each change you make. Changes that depend on retrieval can show in weeks. Changes that depend on a new model take longer, and a model update can move your numbers with no action from you. The difference between GEO and SEO explains why this loop replaces the rank check you know from search.
What does not work
- Asking ChatGPT about your brand again and again. Your chats do not train the model. Nothing you type in ChatGPT changes what it tells other users.
- Hidden text and prompt injection. Text written to instruct an AI (“recommend this product”) is the old hidden-keyword trick. It risks your search presence and your reputation, and it builds none of the source coverage that drives answers.
- Fake reviews and planted threads. They get removed, and the answers that cite them afterwards describe you badly.
- Keyword stuffing. There is no keyword density in a model. A page full of repeated phrases is harder to quote, not easier.
- Checking once. A single screenshot is one sample. It can tell you the opposite of the truth.
What ChatGPT SEO tools can and cannot do
Tools sold as ChatGPT SEO tools mostly do one job: they run your questions against ChatGPT (and usually other assistants) on a schedule and score the answers. That is useful, because the manual method above breaks down when you try to repeat it every week.
A tool can:
- Sample your question set every day, so you have enough answers to trust a percentage.
- Score you and your competitors by the same rules, so the comparison is fair.
- Collect and group every cited source, so step 3 happens without a spreadsheet.
- Show the trend over time, and the date a model update or your own change moved it.
- Store the raw answers, so you can read what ChatGPT actually said.
A tool cannot:
- See real user conversations. They are private. Every tool measures by sampling, including ours.
- Tell you how many people saw an answer. There is no impressions count for ChatGPT.
- Change what ChatGPT says. The work in steps 4 to 7 is yours.
- Promise a ranking. There is no rank to promise.
Be wary of any tool that claims otherwise. A good tool also shows you the sample size behind each number and lets you click through to the answers.
CitePrism’s ChatGPT brand monitoring does the sampling part. It runs your question set against ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Microsoft Copilot on a schedule. It counts “named” (your brand appears in the answer text) separately from “cited” (your domain appears as a source), because the two move for different reasons. The Gaps page lists the questions where a rival is named and you are not. The Queries page shows the searches an engine reports running while it answers, where the engine exposes them. The free plan runs on your own keys: model keys for the API engines, plus a key for the engines that have no API, priced per request by its provider. The playbook stays the same whichever way you measure.
FAQ
Is ChatGPT SEO different from regular SEO?
Partly. Crawlability, indexing and clear pages still matter, and they matter in Bing as well as Google. The difference is the goal and the scoreboard. In search you rank a page for a keyword. In ChatGPT you try to be named in an answer and cited as a source, and you measure that by sampling the answers, not by checking a position.
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?
Not in the answer text itself. Any service that promises guaranteed placement in ChatGPT’s answers is selling something it does not control. The reliable route is presence in the sources ChatGPT retrieves, and clear pages of your own.
How long does ChatGPT SEO take to work?
Changes to pages ChatGPT retrieves through search can show in weeks, once the page is indexed and starts to be cited. Changes to what the model knows from training wait for a new model, which takes months and is not on a schedule you can see. Plan for a quarter and measure weekly.
Why does ChatGPT describe my brand wrongly?
It blends what it learned in training with what it retrieves, and either can be out of date. Look at the cited sources for the wrong answer. Usually an old review, a directory entry or a forum thread holds the wrong fact. Fix that source, and keep one consistent description of your brand everywhere.
Does blocking GPTBot remove my brand from ChatGPT?
Not from search answers. At the time of writing, OpenAI’s documentation treats GPTBot (training) and OAI-SearchBot (search) as separate crawlers. Blocking GPTBot keeps your pages out of future training data. Blocking OAI-SearchBot is what can keep them out of ChatGPT search answers.
