Profound Alternatives for AI Visibility Tracking, Compared Honestly

Profound is the best-known AI visibility platform and it is priced for enterprises. Here is how the alternatives differ, where Profound still wins, and how to choose.

Profound is the name most teams meet first when they go looking for AI visibility tooling, and it earned that position with a polished product, enterprise features and strong marketing. It is also built and priced for large brands. If you are a small product team or an agency with a handful of clients, you are probably reading this because the price did not fit the budget.

We build CitePrism, one of the alternatives, so this comparison has a horse in the race. We will keep it honest anyway, starting with where Profound genuinely wins. Everything here describes Profound at the time of writing and will drift; their own site is the source of truth.

Where Profound is ahead

Credit where due:

  • Enterprise workflow. SSO, managed onboarding and reporting built for executives. If procurement has requirements and the budget is approved, that machinery exists for a reason.
  • Team and history. Profound has been at this longer than most, with the dataset, integrations and iteration that implies.
  • Breadth of packaging. Adjacent products under one contract: AI crawler analytics on your own server logs, shopping surfaces, and an agent that acts on findings. If you want one vendor for the whole motion, that is a real convenience.

If those are your requirements, Profound is a reasonable choice. The rest of this post is about what the alternatives do differently and who should look at them.

What every tool in this category has in common

All of them, Profound and the alternatives alike, work the same way: they keep a set of prompts, run them against the assistants on a schedule, and parse the answers for brand mentions, positions and citations. Nobody has access to real user conversations with ChatGPT, because those are private. We explain this at length in what AI visibility tools actually measure.

That matters for choosing a tool, because it means the differences are not in the data source. They are in how transparent the pipeline is, how much of the raw material you can inspect, how the cost model works, and what the tool tells you to do next.

The questions that separate the alternatives

Can you read the raw answers? Every chart in this category is computed from sampled answers. A tool that shows you the underlying responses can be audited. A tool that shows only the aggregate cannot. If you will put these numbers in front of a client or a board, this is the first question to ask.

Is the sample size visible? A percentage with no sample size attached is decoration. Look for tools that show the count and grey out numbers that are too thin to trust, rather than dressing up five runs as a trend.

What does it cost to run at your scale? Enterprise platforms bundle the model API calls into a subscription. Bring-your-own-keys tools let you pay the providers directly at their price, with a software fee on top or none at all. For a small prompt set the difference is large: sampling across the four API engines costs on the order of five cents per prompt on default models, so twenty prompts once a day is roughly $28 a month in API fees. Our pricing page works through the arithmetic.

Which surfaces are covered? ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity have APIs. Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Microsoft Copilot do not, and reading them means reading the product itself. Coverage of those surfaces varies by tool and by plan, and it changes often enough that each vendor’s own page is the only honest source.

Does it tell you what to do? Measurement without guidance is a dashboard you stop opening. Look for the tool to name the prompts where a rival is recommended instead of you, the sources cited for that, the searches the engines ran, and a concrete list of what to publish or where to get listed.

CitePrism, specifically

CitePrism is the alternative we build. It samples ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Microsoft Copilot on a schedule and reports visibility rate, share of voice, average rank, first-mention rate and citation share. The parts that answer the questions above:

  • Every chart clicks through to the stored raw answers, and every rate greys out below ten answers.
  • Every metric definition is published on the site, and the cost of every run is shown next to it.
  • The free plan runs every engine and every feature on your own keys. Pro is $29 a month or $299 a year and runs on our keys with daily usage included.
  • Gaps shows the prompts where a competitor is named and you are not, with the sources cited. Queries shows the searches the engines ran. Opportunities writes a weekly action list, and a Monday digest sends it by email.

Where we concede: managed onboarding, SSO and executive reporting are not our focus today. The side-by-side comparison says so in its own rows.

How to choose

Three questions get you most of the way:

  1. Budget shape. An approved enterprise line item makes Profound viable. A tooling budget under a hundred dollars a month points at a bring-your-own-keys tool, and it is worth measuring your brand by hand once first so you know what the numbers mean.
  2. Audit requirements. If you need to show a client or a board the raw answers behind a number, pick the tool that stores and shows them.
  3. Who does the work. If you have an in-house team that will act on findings, guidance features matter more than reporting polish. If you want a vendor to run the motion for you, the enterprise platforms sell that.

FAQ

Is CitePrism a full replacement for Profound?

For scheduled sampling, share of voice, rank and citation tracking across the seven engines listed above: yes, on every plan. For the enterprise reporting workflow, SSO and managed onboarding: no, and we say so on the comparison page rather than pretending otherwise.

Why is a bring-your-own-keys tool so much cheaper?

Because you pay the model providers directly at their price for the sampling, and the software fee on top is small or zero. Enterprise platforms bundle the same API calls into a contract that also funds their sales motion, account management and margin. The underlying data is produced the same way.

Will two AI visibility tools give the same numbers?

No. Different prompt sets, schedules, sample sizes and mention-detection logic produce different numbers, and both can be internally consistent. Compare trends within one tool rather than absolute numbers across tools, and prefer the tool whose raw answers you can read.

Do the alternatives cover Google AI Overviews and Copilot?

Some do, on some plans. These surfaces have no public API, so the tool has to read the product itself. CitePrism includes them on every plan. For other tools, check the vendor’s current coverage page, because this changes often.
