1) Fix the questions
Choose 15 to 25 buyer questions and keep them stable, so rank compares like with like from week to week.
A search rank tracker reports a position on a results page. An AI answer has no results page. It names a handful of brands in a list or a paragraph. CitePrism tracks where your brand lands among those names, across many sampled answers and seven engines, and reports it next to how often you are named at all. No tool can see real user conversations, so the rank is a statistic over sampled answers.
Rank is your position among the tracked brands (you and your competitors) that an answer names. Named third among them is rank 3. The same question gets a different answer each time, so CitePrism averages that position over every sampled answer that names you.
Ask ChatGPT the same question twice and the order can change. A single result is one draw, not a rank.
Average rank counts only the answers that name you. Rank 1 in 5 answers of 100 loses to rank 3 in 60 of 100 (illustrative figures), so visibility rate sits beside it.
The first name in an answer is the one a skimming reader sees first. First-mention rate tracks the share of answers that name you before any rival.
How it works
Choose 15 to 25 buyer questions and keep them stable, so rank compares like with like from week to week.
Each run asks every engine every question. Pro allows up to four runs a day, each at a separate UTC hour.
Check average rank and first-mention rate against visibility rate, then open the raw answers behind any change.
Often more than people expect. The same question can return a different set of brands, in a different order, on each run. A model update can also change the order from one day to the next. So CitePrism greys out any metric with fewer than 10 answers behind it, and one answer never counts as a rank. Read the weekly trend, not the daily number, and open the raw answers behind a move before you act on it.
Because one answer is one draw. The order of brands shifts between runs, between models and between days. A manual check catches one of those orders and calls it a rank. Rank over many scheduled answers, with fewer than 10 answers greyed out, separates a real move from noise.
For each sampled answer that names you, CitePrism records your position among the tracked brands that answer names. Average rank is the mean of those positions. Answers that do not name you do not count toward rank. They lower your visibility rate instead, which is why the two metrics appear together.
Both. Rank is tracked on seven engines: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Microsoft Copilot. Engines can rank the same brands in a different order, so the per-engine view shows where you lead and where you trail.
